In this unit you will be investigating masks. You will be developing your drawing skills, investigation and writing skills, and planning and making a mask.
Our goal is to find out about some of the reasons people have made masks, and then to make our own reason for making one.

Before we can begin to plan and make our own masks we have to find out about how other people have made masks and for what purposes? You are going to be asked to write a 'statement of intent' about your own mask- this means you have to be clear what the function of your mask is.
You will choose 4 masks, and you MUST ensure they are from a variety of times and places, and were made for different purposes.
We will be using the Analysing Art work sheet posted below to write Analysis of your chosen masks. I suggest you make this work in Word and then paste it into your website.
Above you will see five buttons that will take you to resources useful for this task.

Before you attempt your own first analysis of artworks we will try one together about the mask below.
Planning and Statement of Intent
We are now ready to begin the process of designing and making your own mask. You will need to decide what the mask is for? What will it communicate?
Once you have decided that you can begin the designing/planning. You will need to start off with a mind-map, then produce a series of drawings showing the development of your thinking towards your idea for a mask. We will look at examples of these stages.
TASK 1
We know what Mind Maps look like - there is an example below - you will make one to help you start your planning process. The centre of your Mind Map will be the question - "What ideas do masks communicate?" Be careful here, yes the question is somewhat about 'function and purpose' of masks, but we have to think a bit deeper to arrive at the idea......
Take the 'Mask of Agammemnon ' - we know its purpose was to cover the face of a dead person, but we decided that the idea that was being communicated was about reinforcing the power of the rulers of Mycenae.
You can use the information gained through your research and analysis of masks to help with this task. You can also add anything else that occurs to you whilst mind mapping.
The Mind Map is to help you decide what mask to make and for what purpose?
Please note - you will NOT be copying any mask that currently exists and you do not have to stick to the purposes of masks that already exist. In fact it will be much more interesting to INTERPRET the task and be CREATIVE in your thinking.

TASK 2
Once you have Mind Mapped you are ready to write a Draft Statement of Intent. This is where you say what you are going to make and why. You say what you want people who see your mask to think about. You may find that you refine your Statement of Intent as you develop your thinking.
TASK 3
You are now ready to start drawing out possible designs for your mask. You need to show you have thought of different alternatives of how to communicate the ideas in your Statement of Intent.
You will produce a Design Sheet. This will include your sketches of ideas for masks, print outs of examples of masks you think are useful or print outs of any other material you think would be useful.
Below is an example of a sheet of design ideas for a mask whose function is to scare off bullies.

Summative Reflection
When you have completed your mask you should:
- make sure you have a photographic record of the process of making your mask
- make sure you have a photograph of the finished mask ( of you wearing it!)
- Write a summative reflection that mentions how well you think you have met your statement of intent, uses the language of the unit over view ( at the top of this page), and mentions which ATLs you think you have developed throughout the unit.
Costume Design
Once you have completed your mask you will be designing a costume that 'fits' your mask. You will go through a process of making a design sheet, just like you did for your mask.
You must keep a record of each stage of your process and post it on your website.
When you have a costume design you think will work you will do a 'photoshoot' of yourself wearing your mask - we will be painting your costume onto this photo to make it look like you are wearing it.
Think about where you should take this photograph and what position you should be in, you may need 'props' as well.
(This last task brings together all of the skills we have practiced this year and is an opportunity for you to be very creative)
