Defcon 1! Black Alert! Code Red! - End Game
We have made it to the very last phase of the course! It is important that you know exactly what you need to do to finish successfully. Firstly your Process Portfolio must be complete and ready to submit during the week 3rd-7th March.
That leaves you 3 weeks to complete all of the Exhibition preparation - framing work, printing any digital final pieces, writing curatorial rationales, writing exhibition texts, and photographing all Exhibition pieces. The standard of these things makes a considerable difference to your grade. ( my IA marks will be based on the digital document of your work as will the External Examiners Moderation of your grades).

Welcome back - countdown to March!
Welcome back - it is your final year! We have already established what needs to be achieved and the rate of production you need to keep up. Time management will be key to your success. To produce work of high enough quality you will need to spend time, lots of time. Your problem is that time is the one resource that is most pressured in Grade 12. So.....
- Use ALL the opportunities you are given for gaining extra studio time. I am willing to offer regular weekend Open Studio sessions BUT only if they are utilised by YOU.. I expect to see you in the studio before/after school, during breaks, during study periods. This space allows you to leave work in progress out.......
- Monitor your own progress against the criteria and tasks/components. DO NOT assume it will be alright and that someone will catch you if you fall...... this is your final year and so my assumption is that I can expect a mature and self motivating approach from you. I will swim halfway across the river......
- If you did not complete your Comparative Study last year you MUST make this a priority AT HOME. You DO NOT have time to work on this during the classes. Our focus is on Process Portfolio and production of studio pieces for your Exhibition. I will give you feedback about your CS but you need to factor the completion of this into your work outside of class.
- If you have not made the artwork in response to your CS and the 3-5 slides you have to do this ASAP. ( review how many pieces you have that you can use in your exhibition and how many you need to complete to achieve the minimum amount of pieces).
- We will be having one to one reviews of your individual status - this will form the basis of the second entry on the IB monitoring form. The plan that comes from this is your road map to success......
- You need to be secure in your artistic direction and have a pretty clear notion of how your work will form a 'coherent whole that effectively communicates thematic or stylistic relationships through individual pieces'. In October you will be 'pitching' your artistic vision to a visiting artist.........
- Your work needs to continue to demonstrate connection to ideas, processes, and techniques from other artists. You need to be conscientious in seeking opportunities to see and think about art. ( resources at the foot of this page and on all the pages from last year, trips during holidays, exhibitions here in Muscat, or in the region ).
Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance....
For submission you will need:
HL students:-
Comparative Study
10-15 screens/pages/slides
plus
3-5 screens/pages/slides to show reflection and connection to your own studio practice
Process Portfolio
13-25 screens/pages/slides
Summary of what to include:
· the development of art-making skills and techniques
· experiments with media and technologies
· the investigation of their own art development in the context of related art genres
· personal reflections
· their responses to first-hand observations
· creative ideas for exploration and development
· their evaluations of art practices and art-making experiences
· their responses to diverse stimuli and to artists and their works, especially in relation to their own art
· detailed evaluations and critical analysis
· records of valued feedback received
· challenges they have faced and their achievements.
Check you have examples of all these in your Process Portfolio - use this list as a check list.
Exhibition HL students submit 8–11 artworks.
The selected pieces should show evidence of their technical accomplishment during the visual arts course and an understanding of the use of materials, ideas and practices appropriate to visual communication.
Students also evidence the decision-making process which underpins the selection of this connected and cohesive body of work for an audience in the form of a curatorial rationale.
. HL students submit a curatorial rationale that does not exceed 700 words.
. HL students submit exhibition text (stating the title, medium, size and intention) for each artwork. (500 characters)
SL students:-
Comparative Study = 10-15 screens/pages/slides
Process Portfolio = 9-18 screens/pages/slides
Exhibition = 4-7 art works
Time Frame
In the 2018/19 school year you have 29 weeks until you set up your exhibition. (including holidays, mock exam weeks etc)
Therefore, if you intend to make 8 artworks you will need to produce a new artwork every 3.6 weeks (along with related Process Portfolio slides).
If you want to make 11 artworks you will need to produce a new art work every 2.6 weeks (along with related Process Portfolio slides).
Every piece you make ahead of this time frame makes time. ( each piece of exhibition art work you have in advance of next year makes for longer period pf time per piece).
Lastly - The FLOW of creative endeavour.
Use your summer wisely............
