Pre-Unit Preparation
So we are ready to tackle the E-portfolio unit successfully we will undertake this 3 week mini-unit before Winter Break to ensure we have some of the concepts and requirements in place:
Week 1: Artist Investigation
Investigate the artists Barbara Kruger, Lalla Essaydi, Shirin Neshat.
Each artist use text and photography in their work. What is the intention of each of these three artists? You will need to read the sources to find this out.
Write a mini analysis focussing on the artists' context( use the questions in blue below to help you write this), the content of the work ( what are the images of and what do they communicate), and technique ( how do the formal qualities of the artwork contribute to the meaning?).
You must use in-text citations and include bibliography. (Remember to cite all used images and information gained from a source)
Context:
PERSONAL CONTEXT:
Can the background of the artist tell us why the work was created?
How has the artist background and personal events influenced the work.
Which other people (other artists) have influenced this artist?
WIDER CONTEXT:
How does the work link with the social, cultural or political history of the time?
(Think about links to religion, science, technology, culture, technology or psychology and trends, ideas, and values at the current time?)( was it a time of war or social change?)
Do you think these circumstances influenced the meaning and function of the work?
Do these circumstances affect why and how it was made?
Content:
What is in the work? What objects/images has the artist depicted in the Art?
Write what you know the artist is trying to communicate in his/her work? What is the artist trying to say or represent? Does it have a symbolic or moral meaning? Do you think the work is successful in communicating the artists ideas?
Techniques/ Processes
What material(s) has the artist used? How has he/she used the materials together? How has the artist applied the materials? What tools have been used? What processes have been used to create the artwork?
Week 2: Find your issue and plan your product
A ) Find a contemporary world issue that you are interested in.
This could include, but are not limited to: conflict, cultural tolerance, environmental waste, drought, famine, gender equality, natural/manmade disasters, political asylum, racism, refugees. If you are 'stuck' then we have some resources you can use listed on the PCUP posted below)
B) Plan your 'product' - which must involve in some way text and a photographic image. You need to show you have been purposeful in choosing format, type face/font, colour, composition. You should be able to explain your reasons for your choices:
This requires:
- a mind map
- statement of intent
- two success criteria
- sketches/drafts
Week 3: Create your product and reflect
A) Create an artwork combining photography and text inspired by Barbara Kruger, Lalla Essaydi, Shirin Neshat.
For this task you can create one product or a series of images.
B) Document the process
C) Reflect on your final product
Write a short EBI and WWW reflection.
Tasks:
There are 4 tasks you must complete for the eportfolio:
1.Presentation: Unit-related research - the investigation task.
Assessed with Criteria/Objectives - Ai, Aii, Diii (critique artwork of others)
2. Development: Creating - this is where you document your process and on-going formative reflection.
Artwork Assessed with Criteria/Objectives - Bi, Ci, Ciii
3.Outcome:Creating - this is the production and completion of your 'final piece'
Artwork Assessed with Criteria/Objectives - Bii
4. Commentary: Reflection on artistic process in the context of the unit
Assessed with Criteria/Objectives - Di, Diii (critique own artwork)
To ensure you have evidence for each of these tasks you will follow the steps below.

To ensure you have evidence for each of these tasks you will follow the steps below.
- visit the resources posted on the Partially Completed Unit Plan ( PCUP posted as doc below) and find two that you think are an interesting prospect for investigating further. You can of course add other artists to the list, as long as their work relates in some way to the concepts of the unit.
- Produce analysis of at least two artworks by two different artists whose work seeks to impact the world and instigate change, raise awareness or provoke thought about a contemporary world issue. You will then be COMPARING and CONTRASTING their work in terms of what they intend and how they 'work'. Your analysis will be different than our previous work in that you will focus on the FUNCTION and PURPOSE of the artwork. How does the artist use Formal Qualities to develop/further/communicate the Function and Purpose of the work?
- Your analysis must include at least 10 words/phrases describing/explaining the formal qualities/elements and principals of design used.
- Your analysis must include at least 5 points about the CONTEXT the artwork was made in ( use the Context section of the Analysing Art work doc help with this). You must comment on whether you think seeing the artwork in it's original or displaced context changes its impact. Can the emotional response to art be as significant when the art is about an issue or event that the audience has not experienced? Please be aware that you must cite all sources for images and information gathered from your research sources in-text (use MLA or APA) and include a bibliography. Deadline January 17th 2019 Between 4 and 8 'pages'.
- Mind-map - with the statement of inquiry in the middle of the 'web' - this isn't restricted to the world of art but can include your thoughts, experiences, content/knowledge from other subjects. Initial evidence of planning, design sheets, rough sketches etc 2 'pages'
- Formulate statement of intent with indication of how you want the work to impact an audience and how you will know it has been successful. Deadline for Mind-map to statement of intent 27th January. We will address this together on Sunday 27th January - this is the point where you will write your Statement of Intent and it must include an 'inquiry question' (draft your statement of intent and then a question that will help direct your studio inquiry) . There are examples on the PCUP, which you could use, or you can formulate your own.
- Process, experiment decisions, on-going process journal and reflection. Between 27th January - 10th February. At least 5 pages of experiment and drafts showing awareness of thinking about making an artwork that impacts the world. (from small scale experiments with media to more considered draft versions. This phase MUST show REFINEMENT of your work and ideas).
- Production of final piece with regular reflection on how the piece is meeting your own success criteria, to include peer review 10th February - 1Oth March. 5-10 pages
- Summative reflection that includes evidence of having asked for responses to the finished piece. You MUST refer to the language of the Unit overview and the ATLs in your reflection. Include your answer to either the inquiry question you formulated or one from the PCUP. Deadline 17th March 2- 5 pages
- Include a bibliography 1-2 pages
- For this unit you will be submitting your work as a PDF. We will use Powerpoint, google slides or other tools that can be converted into a PDF of 50MB or less. You are allowed a Maximum of '30 A4 pages'.
- If you ensure you keep a thorough and reflective journal of all of your thinking, planning and making you will have the evidence to meet the criteria to a high level.
