The 20th century was a time of rapid and frequent change in Western culture - the art produced was a mirror to that furious pace. What was reflected was as often horrific as it was beautiful.
The world was becoming smaller, artists had access to images and objects produced by cultures that had very different aesthetics. An instance is the painting above. Picasso owned West African masks. Here we must proceed with care, Picasso 'appropriated these objects from another culture, not to understand or engage with that culture, but to disrupt/change/develop his own culture. He could be accused of 'cultural colonialism'.
There are many examples in western art of the 'influence of 'the other'. This certainly is part of our concern with this unit, but it would be wrong to say it was the only factor that triggered change. Culture does not change isolated pockets, but all the elements that make up a culture are inter-related. An advance in technology will impact artistic production, politics, conflict, economics are tied to changes in other areas of human endeavour. ( perhaps you have an understanding of globalisation that tallies with this ?).
You need to have an understanding of this to be able to see how art in the west arrived at abstraction.

Tasks:
- Complete the investigation at home. Post on website. Deadline 21st - instructions on managebac
- create a 'white on white' piece that you believe to be beautiful
- create a Parla inspired piece that involves a prepared ground and a 'cloud' of repeated 'calligraphic forms' ( these may be actual words)
- create a 'dance drawing' - you may collaborate with classmates to do this.
Write a reflection that includes:
- your understanding of some of the intentions of artists whose work is abstract. You may refer also to the history of art to provide context.
- indication of how this unit has challenged or extended your sense of your artistic self.
- a record of what you think was successful in your process, problems you encountered and how you resolved these, and what you learnt from the study of the artists and how they impacted your own work.
Make Process Portfolio slides based on the work from this unit.
