Design Phase of unit
We now have to think about how we can turn our artworks into proposals for the Sifah Jogging Path.
You will intially work individual and then in small teams on this task.
Design Problem:
How can we design artworks to punctuate the jogging path at Jebel Sifah?
Restrictions - safety, no dark colours of the floor, no sharp edges.
Task1:
on a fresh sheet of paper mind map possible solutions to the design problem. You can consider making a 'relief' print into a tile. You can think big and involve sculpture or benches. You can think health and involve workout equipment etc Your design can be a one off or something that is repeated or evolves along the whole path. BUT the design must have some visual link to your Sifah artwork.
Task 2:
Select your best idea and make a drawing/rendering that shows what it would look like 'in situ'.
You have 3 lessons to arrive at your idea.

Developing Ideas
Starting is hard. Searching for that first step in a design process is tough. Once the flow is going things get easier.
All creative activity has this in common. We will look at how artists and designers begin. You have already made an artwork based on our visit to Sifah so you have a 'seed' to start with.
First though we will explore how artists/develop ideas.

Using your artwork as starting point your job is to think of some possible solutions to our design problem. We will try an example together.
Initial drawings
The variety of these drawings of the same place is striking. Our drawings are as individual as our handwriting. Does this mean these are not only drawings of landscape but also , to some extent, self portraits?
Introduction to watercolour
In your description of technique use the vocabulary:-
- transparency/opacity,
- layers
- wash
- pigment
- gum arabic
- weight of paper
- resist technique
Thinking about Thinking
After we have made our first artistic responses to landscapes we are ready to think about what the purpose of landscape art is. What is it that artists who make work about landscape are sharing with us? What are their intentions? We will need to think about this to help us decide what we want to communicate with our audience when we show our landscape art.
Think, pair, share routine
You are going to think about and then write short responses to the following questions (post your responses on your website - under the heading 'Thinking about Thinking'), then you are going to share with a partner, and then together formulate joint answers ( you will need to have these written and posted on both your sites), which you will then share with the whole group as we share our ideas.
You must post both your short written responses and a written reflection about the group discussion on your website.
If you have already started/completed your research/investigation task you can refer to specific artists work, and if not this discussion will provide you with some ideas that you can use when analysing landscape art.
Questions:
1.When you look at a landscape whilst drawing or painting it is it different from our 'ordinary looking'?
2.List the things that change whilst we are drawing/painting a landscape - for example the light can change frequently.
3. Do you think we all perceive the world around us in exactly the same way? Explain your answer.
4. When an artist shares a piece of landscape art with an audience what is he/she sharing?
( you may be able to think of a few different answers to this depending on the artwork you are thinking of. If you haven't yet looked at the links to artists in the investigation now would be a good time to look at a few examples of landscape art to help you answer the question).
Once you have written a reflection about our discussion you can continue with the investigation task.

Seven Tasks
We are ready to begin our landscape unit. There are seven steps we will be taking to prepare for the discussion outlined above.
1. Learn to stretch paper and document this on your website with comment about how and why.
2. Charcoal and chalk drawing of the landscape with and emhasis on structure.
3. Drawing with a 'restless' line.
4. Pen and wash drawing of the landscape.
5. Learning how to use watercolour and then making a painting.
6. Investigation task.
7. Class discussion - Thinking about Thinking'.
