Grade 8 MYP 3
Pre-instruction tasks: In Depth Unit.
Before we begin our exploration of the ways artists depict space in their work and what these various ways can do and mean I need to know what you already know……..
So today you will produce two drawings:
Once these jobs are complete we will have a class discussion about what we know about how artists depict space on their work and what we think about the drawings we have just done…….
Pre-instruction tasks: In Depth Unit.
Before we begin our exploration of the ways artists depict space in their work and what these various ways can do and mean I need to know what you already know……..
So today you will produce two drawings:
- You will make a drawing of a part of the school. The drawing must include some of the buildings, windows and doors. You may use line and tone in your drawing. You may use rulers, erasers and pencils (choose your materials thoughtfully). 20 minutes – then return to the studio. We will make a new page on your website called Unit2: In Depth. You will add the unit overview and post your drawing and label it ‘Pre-instruction drawing 1’.
- You will then collect the drawing board, paper and charcoal and chalk to do your second drawing – which is to be of the mountains behind school. There are some good vantage points around the drama court and up and on the stairs. You will have 20 minutes for this drawing. Once time is up return to the art room and post a photograph of the drawing labelled ‘Pre-instruction drawing2’.
Once these jobs are complete we will have a class discussion about what we know about how artists depict space on their work and what we think about the drawings we have just done…….
Linear Perspective
A systematic way of depicting three dimensional space on a two dimensional surface.
You will be learning how to use this method of depicting space and then producing an artwork applying your knowledge.
Below is the PPT we will be using in class.

Atmospheric Perspective
VENICE WITH THE SALUTE - WILLIAM TURNER 1840
Tasks:
Lesson 1
Today I will demonstrate the use of oil pastels and chalk pastels. 10 minutes
- You will choose which medium to use and then find a comfortable spot to produce a colour observation drawing of the landscape around school. You are looking for a view that shows forms becoming less distinct as they fade into the distance. 40 minutes
- You need to take a photograph of the same view.
- Both images must then be posted onto your website. ( NB: we will be making an impressionist painting from these images - BUT if you have a photograph of a different place - THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN - that shows atmospheric perspective, you may also post that and use it instead)
- Begin your investigation task: Choose two artworks by two different artists from different time periods. ( there are some links to suitable artworks below). One must show use of linear perspective, and one must show use of atmospheric perspective. You must post these images, labelling them with name of artist, title, date, medium, size, and add full citation for the source. Once you have done this COMPARE and CONTRAST the images. How are they similar? How are they different?
You will be exploring how Impressionist artists applied paint. You will be making a 'sheet of studies'. These are essentially small painted copies of parts or the whole of impressionist paintings.
Things you will need to consider:
- working from 'the background to the front'
- use of 'complementary or opposite colours'
- the shape and placement of each brush stroke - the paintings may look 'fast' but the artists who made them gained that quickness through many hours of practice!
You will be planning and producing an 'impressionist' painting of your landscape. Before you begin you MUST write an explanation of what you have learnt from making your 'studies' and what you are going to try and achieve in your own piece. ( EG: I found that when making my studies that Impressionist artists used.............. and ........... this helped create and effect of ........................I am going to try and achieve a similar effect in my painting. I want my painting to show pictorial depth by the way I .......................)
Once you have done this you can start your painting. When it is complete you will post a photograph of it on your website and write a short reflection about whether you think you have successfully met your own goals for the piece.
Linear Perspective Crash Course.............
We will take a little pause to learn the basics and play ......
Lesson 4:
Your task is to investigate ways of showing depth in paintings that are neither linear or atmospheric. You will need to look beyond the 'Western tradition' of Art. There are links to some useful research sources below.
You must:
- post at least two images as examples of the way of showing depth you have chosen.
- You must label them with name of artist, title, date, medium, size, and add full citation for the source.
- You must explain how they show depth and, if you can, why?
- You must produce a small 'study' of one of your chosen images. Show you have tried to figure out how the artists made the work. The art room has most 2D art materials for you to use. Whatever you use you must clear away at the end of the lesson. If you use brushes please make sure they are washed thoroughly and are put back where you found them.
Lesson 5:
Your next task is to plan an artwork that combines at least two of the ways artists you have studied create depth or depict space in their art. This part of the unit is focused on Criterion C: Creative Thinking. I need to see how well you can show your thinking.
- On a new sheet of paper think of at least three alternative ways you could combine different methods of showing space in a painting. Draw them, once you have an idea make colour versions of them ( studies can be rougher than the final version). They do not have to be large - A5 is fine.
- Once you have an idea of what your piece will look like make a more finished draft. Next class you will be presenting your idea to the class before starting so make sure you can explain what ideas and techniques you have combined.

Summative Task
Once you have finished your 'impressionist' painting you should photograph all of your work leading up to this and your final painting. You need to write a short reflection about this task ( WWW and EBI and say how your painting uses some of the ideas that Impressionists were interested in, ELBOW, capturing our immediate perception of a place, use of complementary/opposite colours).
Once this is posted on your website you will undertake a short research task about other ways that artists from around the world and through time have depicted depth on images. We have explored LINEAR and ATMOSPHERIC perspective but there are many other ways spatial depth is shown in art.
Do google image searches for 'contemporary african art', or 'cave painting', or 'medieval painting' - the question you must ask when looking at these examples is ' how do the artists show depth in their work?' 'Is there an illusion of depth used?'' How are the elements of the painting or drawing arranged?"
Below is a slide show with examples of Australian aboriginal art which has its own way of showing space and place. It also has some examples of Chinese art that organises depth in paintings to a different set of requirements. I have also posted a few links to start you off.
You will select three different examples of how depth and space are shown (not linear or atmospheric perspective). You must post an image with FULLY CITED SOURCE and explain how the image depicts depth/space.
Once you have done this you will plan and make a 2 dimensional artwork that includes at least three different ways of depicting depth. You may use any medium. This is a task that asks you to apply some of the skills that we have practiced this year, but more importantly to show your CREATIVE THINKING.

- mind map/sketching/initial ideas
- planning draft versions deciding on medium/media
- production of final art work
- summative reflection - WWW, EBI, and which ATLs do you think you have developed through planning and making this piece?
- All the above posted on your website.
