Finishing and Extension Tasks
Once you have finished your final artwork for the unit you need to post a good quality image of it on your google site. Then you must write a summative reflection critiquing your work ( this means saying What Went Well and thinking about how it could be Even Better If)
Once you have done this you will be selecting one panel of your page and producing a larger 'stand alone' version of this. Which panel sums up your story best? Which would be the best to use if you could only have a single image as an illustration for a book telling the story?
You can choose to use any of the media we have been practcing with. It must be at least A4 in size.

Visiting Author/Illustrator
As we neared the end of the semester we were very fortunate to have a visit from Stephen Waterhouse, a UK based artist who has published dozens of illustrated children's books as well as teaching at Loughborough University.
The grade 7 students were captivated by his artwork and saw how the process Stephen goes through relates to the processes we use here at school in our units.
As well as learning about how illustrators work Stephen introduced some exciting character design exercises which not only resulted in great artworks but were also a lot of fun! We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and work with Stephen.

Decision Time!
Once you have finished your draft version of your Graphic Novel page you have a decision to make about whether to aim for a more finished version, or a more expressive version. You could also combine these approaches if you wish.
Tasks:
Tasks:
- photograph your finished draft version and post on your google site, write a reflection that notes what you think went well and what you could improve. It should also state whether you think you are going to make a more graphic highly finished version, or if you are going to interpret your story in a more 'arty' way using collage and mixed media.
- If you are going 'neater' we will start with a more expensive paper, sharp pencils and clean rulers.
- If you are going to be more expressive you need to do some planning of how this will look.

Investigation Task
Below you will find our first investigation task. You will be starting this after our initial practical workshops, so everyone will need an ipad or laptop. I have gathered some resource links for you but you will need to find your own as well.

COMPOSITION
You will be learning how artists from a variety of times and places have told stories using visual language. You will develop drawing skills related to drawing people, inventing 'characters' and 'controlling' composition. You will be using these skills to plan a page of a Graphic Novel - but you will also be asked to be inventive and experimental in your conception of what form this may take........
Tasks
Task 1:
We will start with some practical workshop sessions. These will take our first 4 lessons.
Complete the investigation tasks on your website – make sure you cite your sources!!! ( this means labelling work with the name of the artist, if known, the date, title and medium the work is made of, AND the exact webpage you found the image and information from.
Task 3:
You need a story to tell. It is important that this story is meaningful and intends to ‘impact the audience’.
To ensure this you will need to generate three ideas;
Before we go to the next stage we need to talk about COMPOSITION and how we can control how our audience experieneces our work.
Task 4:
Begin a very sketchy draft version of your idea so we know roughly how the story will be told – remember you will probably NOT be able to tell the whole story, just one dramatic part. Produce a sheet of drawings developing your ideas about which part of your story you will tell. Practice and experiment before the next step so you have a clear plan. Which media will you use? Which images? Which composition of 'frames'?
Task 5:
Review with me – at this stage we will make decisions about composition and make a more finished draft.
The 'final art work' for this project must be more than an A4 page. Your job is be much more experimental in your use of media, you can use collage, mixed media, and three dimensional objects.
WRITE A STATEMENT OF INTENT - this must explain what you wish to communicate not just in terms of what happens in your story but also what atmosphere you want to evoke.
Task 6:
Make your final version.
Task 7:
What Went Well, Even Better If - summative review.
We will start with some practical workshop sessions. These will take our first 4 lessons.
- Black and white and read all over - using black and white paint over photos to create a more dramatic impact.
- collage to create a mood
- basic figure drawing and using the 'action line figure' method
- using silhouettes to create characters.

Task 3:
You need a story to tell. It is important that this story is meaningful and intends to ‘impact the audience’.
To ensure this you will need to generate three ideas;
- Find a current news story that you think would be suited to a ‘graphic novel’ style format. You can search any news provider for this (be careful that you do not choose a story that is ‘fake news’ or so biased it is debateable!). You could choose a news story that is about something you care about and want to share with an audience – for instance if you feel strongly about an issue you could use this project to raise awareness or change people’s views.
- A story based on a personal experience – think of something that had great impact on you, it could be happy, sad, thought provoking, puzzling, exciting……

Grading Exercise - getting to understand the criteria
Below you will find two documents, one is an example reflection that you will be marking using the document called 'Review Sheet'.
You will read the example reflection on your own, and then with a partner decide what grade you would award the reflection. We will then discuss our decisions as a whole class.
Once we have all understood exactly what a student could do to get a good grade.
You will then use the checklist to ensure you have all required work completed. Please note the Reflection that is the last task on the checklist is a summative assessment. Deadline Sunday 5th March.
