Thinking Creatively
An ATL skill and an Arts criterion.
1.In what ways, in grade 9 and 10, do you think you have addressed this criterion? With your partner discuss and note examples from your work that you feel would be examples of thinking creatively.
2. Begin the 'MINDMAP' task as outlined in our last lesson's task list.

Wednesday 26th September 2018
We have completed the first phase of the unit! Well done! You are now ready to tackle the second half which calls for you to interpret the possibilities of making meaningful artworks in response to the statement of inquiry: "Our relationship to the objects we choose to surround ourselves with communicates information about us".
To begin this process there are some tasks:
To begin this process there are some tasks:
- Firstly - two targets written on the document I shared with you. They must be SMART targets and should be focused on what you think you need to do to ensure this next phase of our unit goes well for you.
- Ten Object Portrait - this must be 'of' someone you know well. You will present images of the ten objects in a form that you think is appropriate. ( see the 'ten object example doc. posted lower down this page). Your work for this must be posted on your website. This should be completed by: Sunday 30th September (on managebac)
- How many 'objects' do you own? What counts as an object? What do they 'say' about you? Post a short response to this question on your site.
- Find examples of when people seek to 'unload' possessions rather than accumulate material goods - juxtapose these with Landy's "Breakdown. ( you can see this in the 'Subject Object' ppt posted lower on this page).
- Begin to mindmap your response to the statement of inquiry - this mindmap should then be posted on your site ( for criterion C: Thinking Creatively you must demonstrate a 'range and depth' of creative thinking behaviours. At every opportunity use this language/concept in your reflections, experimentation, development work). From this point onwards you have the freedom to INTERPRET the unit brief. (when we work on the e-portfolio unit you will also be asked to think independently like this). You have a 5 week period to instigate, plan, sustain and resolve an artwork. (NB: you will work for 3 weeks and then have a two week break for a mini-unit about figurative art).
Your first unit of the year will be about the things we surround ourselves with, the material objects that fill our lives. We will look at how artists have explored what these mean to us and communicate about us. You will be asked to be experimental with media, to complete some teacher directed tasks, and to interpret a brief as an individual. You will support your studio inquiry with investigation and reflection.

Below are some images of the fabulous, energetic, enigmatic, experimental drawings you did today. Next lesson you will be asked to produce drawings based on your photographs of the Still Life set up from last week, one of the things you will be asked to maintain is being experimental in your approach.
Above you will find the 'drawing' ppt that contains links to sources that will help you later with your reflection writing.

Tasks
Lesson 1
Having looked at the slideshow together add the images to a new page of your website ( make sure you have 'archived' all the grade 9 work as sub-pages under a 'Grade 9' page). Call the new page 'Subjective Objects'.
Make sure you cite the source for each image. Find out a little more about each artwork and add some text explaining which you think is it's strongest to weakest quality. Explain your reasons. The three qualities you will judge are:
To help you decide which quality is the most evident in each piece of art we will use a Visible Thinking Routine from: http://www.visiblethinkingpz.org/VisibleThinking_html_files/03_ThinkingRoutines/03g_CreativityRoutines/CreativeHunt/CreativeHunt_Routine.html
It is called Creative Hunt.....
Key Prompts:
What’s the main purpose here?
What are the parts and their purposes?
Which are especially smart or creative?
Who is the audience for this?
Be aware that this work will be part of the assessed work - rubric posted on this page.
For our next class you will need your camera and laptop.
Lesson 2
Working from a still life set up (fish and fruit) you will be making a series of small drawings and taking photographs. These will form the planning for a still life piece. The drawings can be of sections, ideas for how you will make a 'successful' composition, observations of texture and form.
You will need your laptop so you can upload your photographs and photos of your drawings/planning.
Experimental approaches to drawing workshop - setting up the idea of being an OPEN MINDED, RISK TAKER wiling to experiment.
Preparing surfaces.
Results should be posted on your website.
Lesson 3
First still life brief set. Begin work
Setting homework assignment to make 'fuel' for second studio piece.

Make sure you cite the source for each image. Find out a little more about each artwork and add some text explaining which you think is it's strongest to weakest quality. Explain your reasons. The three qualities you will judge are:
- The Context it was made in - how the artwork tells us something about the time/place/culture that produced it
- The Concept - the idea behind the work , why the artist made the work.
- The technique - the skill involved in making the artwork.
